Product Questions
What is your process for making maple syrup?
We collect sap from our farm's sugarbush using a mixture of lines and buckets. The sap then goes to our sugar house where we use our evaporator to boil 10 gallons at a time. We never add any flavorings, preservatives, or chemicals, so our maple syrup is always 100% pure.
After boiling, the syrup is 'canned' by hand into glass bottles, and then stored, until it's ready to go to your home.
Is your maple syrup 100% pure?
Our maple syrup contains no preservatives, flavorings, or additives of any kind.
What is the shelf life on maple syrup?
Unopened, your maple syrup should last indefinitely. Once opened, it lasts about 2 years when refrigerated.
Does maple syrup need to be refrigerated after opening?
Yes, pure maple syrup should be kept in the refrigerator after opening to prevent mold and fermentation.
Is maple syrup vegan?
Yes! All of our maple syrup is vegan. There are no animal products used in any part of our process.
Why are there different grades of syrup?
The different grades of maple syrup are based on four key characteristics: color, clarity, density, and flavor.
Generally, syrup with a lighter, more delicate flavor is produced earlier in the sugaring season, while darker, more robust syrup is produced closer to the end of the season.
Here at Spring Hill, we offer syrup in two grades: Amber with Rich Taste and Dark with Robust Taste.
Amber with Rich Taste is usually made at the height of the sugaring season and is the most popular grade for all-around use. It's got all the characteristic maple flavor you expect, and is delicious in everything from salad dressings to cocktails to barbecue sauce.
Dark with Robust Taste syrup is produced as the season progresses, and features a richer, more robust maple flavor.
Does Spring Hill Farm only make maple syrup?
While we live and breathe maple syrup, it's not the only thing we produce on our 300 acre farm.
We've been growing apples, peaches, and more, and hope to have some new, hand-crafted products available online soon!

When is maple syrup season in Vermont?
Maple syrup season in Vermont typically takes place from late February to early April.
This time is also known as Sugaring Season, and it officially starts as soon as the temperatures rise above freezing during the day (while still dipping below freezing at night).
This delicate balance makes Vermont one of the few places in the world where real maple syrup can be produced!
This precious sap runs through the trees until the maple trees begin to bud, usually in mid-April.
